Kevin Pietersen 158 vs. Australia, The Oval, 2005
This was the most important Ashes innings by an England batsman since Ian Botham demoralised Australia on the opening day of the 1986-87 series in Brisbane. And it almost never happened. When Pietersen came out to bat on the last day of the series in 2005 with England needing a draw to secure their first Ashes win in 18 years, Glenn McGrath had just removed Michael Vaughan and Ian Bell in consecutive balls. His hat-trick delivery struck Pietersen on the shoulder and rebounded to gully – only for umpire Billy Bowden to correctly rule not out. More tension was to follow. In the next over, Matthew Hayden dropped a tough chance at slip as Pietersen, still yet to score, pushed forward nervously at Shane Warne. And when Warne himself dropped a straightforward catch at slip when Pietersen, on 15, edged a drive off Brett Lee, it seemed clear which side the Gods had decided to smile on. But there was plenty of work to be done. England went into lunch in effect 133 for five and grateful they had chosen a seventh batsman in Paul Collingwood to protect the lower order. Now the fun really started. As Collingwood leaned on his bat at the other end, Pietersen embarked on the pivotal duel of the day, casting caution to the wind and hammering 33 runs off three post-lunch overs from Brett Lee. Best Innings in last nine world cup
www.mid-day.com The International Cricket Council (ICC) today named world’s leading lubricant company Castrol as its official performance partner for the next five years. ICC has entered into an agreement, which awards Castrol a worldwide rights package from 2010 to 2015 and it will include the 2011 World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. The partnership will also extend to other ICC events, including the 2015 World Cup. The batsman and bowlers are rated in cricket on the runs they score and the wickets they grab but it is rarely seen that the match winners garbs the attention when it comes to over all performance. The ICC along with castrol in the upcoming ODI World Cup will be displaying the names of the players who bats and bowls at a crunch situation and plays the initiative role of guiding the team to victory. Cricket expert Ravi Shastri, ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat and Ace cricket commentator Harsha had a debate on whose innings would they rate as the best one of the nine World Cup played so far. The debate ended rating Adam Gilchrist 2007 World Cup final innings vs Sri Lanka where he scored 149 of just 104 balls among the best. Story & Video By – Rohan Koli,MiD-DAY
